Description of key information

Only one study was available that evaluated toxicity of ethylbenzene to terrestrial plants.  Detached leaves of the runner bean (Phaseolus
multi-florus) and parsnip (Pasticana sativa) were exposed at a range of vapour concentrations for 1 hour. This study was considered unreliable due to an unreliable test system and given a Klimisch score of 3. No other data are available for ethylbenzene exposure to terrestrial plants.

The concentration causing 50 % injury to the leaves of Phaseolus multiflorus (EC50) was 27 mg/L, while the concentration causing 50 % injury to the leaves of Pasticana sativa (EC50) was 48 mg/L. The test design for this study was considered unacceptable, therefore the study was given a Klimisch score of 3 and was considered unreliable. No other data are available for ethylbenzene toxicity to terrestrial plants. However, the substance is not likely to contaminant the soil compartment based on a Level II fugacity model (McKay Level I) and if released into the soil, ethylbenzene is expected to

biodegrade and has a BCF of 110.
