Description of key information

Sulfur dioxide acts as an irritant on the mucous membranes of eyes, nose and throat. A LOAEL of 2 ppm was reported in humans for throat and nasal irritation.

Additional information

Sulfur dioxide acts as an irritant on the mucous membranes of eyes, nose and throat. A LOAEL of 2 ppm was reported in humans for throat and nasal irritation. Signs of irritation of the lower respiratory tract are bronchoconstriction with impairment of lung function parameters and symptoms as coughing. Development of tolerance to the irritating effects of sulfur dioxide in the respiratory tract is possible.

Sulfur dioxide is a gas and therefore guideline-conform skin irritation testing is technically not feasible.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Sulfur dioxide is already legally classified as skin corrosive category 1B according to annex VI of regulation (EC) 1272/2008. This has been confirmed in animal tests and human case reports. Sulfur dioxide will be classified as skin corrosive category 1B (H314).
