Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference substance:
Fatty acids, C8-10 (even numbered)
Reference substance:
Fatty acids, C8-10 (even numbered)
PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for fatty acids, C8 -10 is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2012).

Persistence

Fatty acids, C8 -10 (CAS 68937 -75 -7) is assumed to be readily biodegradable based on good quality read across data (62 – 105 % after 30 d, O2 consumption, OECD 301D; RA CAS 124 -07 -2 and CAS 143 -07 -7). Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for persistence and is not considered to be persistent (P) or very persistent (vP).

Bioaccumulation

Fatty acids, C8 -10 (CAS 68937 -75 -7) has a log Kow of 3.1 (OECD 107). Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for bioaccumulation and is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B) or very bioaccumulative (vB).

Toxicity

Based on appropriate read across data, Daphnia magna was found to be the most sensitive species in a long-term study (OECD 202; RA CAS 334 -48 -5), which resulted in a NOEC (21 d) value higher than the threshold value for toxicity (0.01 mg/L). Moreover, the substance is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (7th ATP). Thus, the criteria set out in Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 are not met and the test substance is not considered to meet the T criterion.
