Simmons (2012) investigated the effects of sodium in form of NaCl and Na2SO4 on duckweed Lemna minor after 7 days of static exposure; the overall lowest 7 -day EC10 and EC50 values (frond number) amount to 165.5 and 781.7 mg Na+/L (Na2SO4 test), respectively, and are above the OECD test limit.
In European stream water, sodium has a median background concentration of 6.8 mg Na+/L (FOREGS). While sodium is not an essential prerequisite for existence for freshwater plants, it is added at substantial concentrations to media used for macrophyte tests (e.g. at 32 mg Na/L in Swedish Standard (SIS) Lemna growth medium and at 410 mg Na/L in 20X AAP growth medium(U.S. EPA)).
In sum, sodium has a low potential for toxicity to aquatic plants.
