Description of key information

According to Annex XI, section 2 of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, testing for a specific endpoint may be omitted if testing does not appear to be scientifically necessary or if it is technically not possible to conduct the study due to specific substance properties. Since the substance sodium dithionite is highly unstable under environmental and physiological conditions, testing for this endpoint is technically not feasible. The substance disproportionates in aqueous solution rapidly to form sodium sulfite and thiosulfate. The disproportionation products sulfite and thiosulfate are chemically unstable in the environment as well and under physiological conditions in biota, being prone to oxidation to sulfates (sulfites) and to disproportionation or oxidation to sulfites and sulfates (thiosulfates).

Therefore, due to its inherent physico-chemical properties, bioaccumulation of sodium dithionite is not expected.
