Endpoint:
relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
20-23 June, 2005
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Relative self-ignition temperature:
ca. 390 °C

Results

A very slow exothermal reaction of the test item occurred at a temperature of approximately 140 °C and led to a temperature of 411 °C. A maximum temperature difference of 25 K between the test item and the oven-temperature was observed.

The temperature of the test item exceeded 400 °C at a corresponding oven temperature of 390 °C.

Conclusions:
The relative self-ignition temperature is 390 °C, according to the testing guideline for autoflammability (solids - determination of relative self-ignition temperature) in the sense of the consolidated version of Council Directive 67/548/EEC Annex V, Method A.16.
Executive summary:

The relative self-ignition temperature of the technical calcium carbide was determined in accordance with the consolidated version of Council Directive 67/548/EEC Annex V, Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties. A.16. Auto-flammability (solids - determination of relative self-ignition temperature).
