Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aluminium fluoride was reported to have low acute toxicity to zebrafish with a 96-hour NOEC value of 100% (v/v) (undiluted water phase of a loading of 1000 mg/L of AlF3), equivalent to 7.6 mg fluoride/L, in an OECD guideline study (Test No. 203). Additionally, the 96-hour LC50 was determined to be greater than 7.6 mg fluoride/L.

Additional information

The potential acute toxicity of AlF3to fish was assessed in zebrafish in accordance with OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 203 and in compliance with GLP (Olsson, 2001). The study was performed in zebrafish using a freshwater, semi-static test system. The size and length of the fish were not reported. To prepare the stock test solution, 5000 mg of AlF3 was added to 5 L of dilution water and stirred for 24 hours. Since the substance was only slightly soluble, the water phase from the mixture was set to 100% v/v. Fish (10/group) were exposed to the undiluted (i.e., 100% v/v) water phase of this loading (1000 mg/L AlF3) in fish medium for a period of 96 hours. Analytical concentrations were 3.0 mg aluminium/L and 7.6 mg fluoride/L. Other test conditions were as per the OECD guideline. No signs of acute toxicity were observed following exposure to water saturated with AlF3. The 96-hour NOEC for AlF3was determined to be 100% v/v (loaded water phase), which was equivalent to 7.6 mg fluoride/L, and the LC50 greater than 7.6 mg fluoride/L. The validity criteria for this test were fulfilled.
