Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Read across justification

Several criteria justify the use of the read across approach to fill data gaps for foots oils using other lubricant base oil analogs. Primarily the basis for the read-across is the similar physical chemical properties shared by the foots oils and other lubricant base oils.

For Foots oils, the long-term toxicity for fish endpoint is addressed by read across to long-term toxicity for aquatic invertebrates. Read across to LBOs has been applied for the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates endpoint, which is justified based on similarities in composition and physical/chemical properties between Foots oils and LBOs. Toxic effects of hydrocarbons are primarily caused by narcosis, and occur in a narrow range of molar concentrations across aquatic taxa; hence, read across between species is justified.

Results of computer modelling to estimate aquatic toxicity show this substance will not produce chronic toxicity to freshwater fish at or below its maximum attainable water solubility (Redman et al., 2010b). These results support the applied read across.
