Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

partition coefficient
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is inorganic

Description of key information

log Kow [trichlorosilane]: Not relevant due to the substance being inorganic and also hydrolysing very rapidly in contact with water

log Kow [Silanetriol]: not relevant for inorganics

log Kow [Silicic acid]: not relevant for inorganics

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the partition coefficient study does not need to be conducted as trichlorosilane and its hydrolysis products are inorganic.

In addition, trichlorosilane reacts very rapidly in contact with water, generating silanetriol and hydrochloric acid. Silanetriol reacts further to give monosilicic acid, which condenses at concentrations above approximately 150 -150 mg/L as SiO2 to give insoluble amorphous polysilicic acid.

log Kow is not relevant for inorganic compounds such as silanetriol and silicic acid.

The purpose of the log Kow study is to understand the interaction of the substance with water and octanol, which acts as a model for lipids in humans and organisms and for organic carbon in soils and sediments. On the basis of structure and supported by predictions, monosilicic acid and silanetriol have a high affinity with water and low affinity for lipids and organic carbon.
