Description of key information

In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex IX, information requirement section 9.3.2, a bioaccumulation study need not be conducted if the subsance has low potential for bioaccumulation (e.g., log Kow < 3).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A study of the octanol/water partition coefficient performed according to the shake-flask procedure of OECD Guideline 107 provides a measured value for log Kow of 2.21 for dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). The US EPA's KOWWIN model predicts a log Kow of 1.66 and the database on which the model is constructed contains a published (public domain) value of 2.25 for DMT (Hansch, C. et al., 1995).

All three of these log10 Kow values lie below the trigger of 3.0 and dimethyl terephthalate is therefore not expected to exhibit significant bioconcentration or bioaccumulation tendencies.

Studies of bioconcentration/bioaccumulation are not triggered for DMT.
