Description of key information

1,1,1,2 -tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) is a gas and it is expected that direct and indirect exposure of sediment is therefore unlikely.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex IX, the sediment simulation test does not need to be conducted as the substance is a gas and it is expected that direct and indirect exposure of sediment is therefore unlikely. Additionally 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) has a low potential for adsorption (log Kow = 1.06). When released to the environment HFC 134a will enter almost exclusively into the ambient air and has little tendency to partition to water or sediment. The most important degradation process occurs in the atmospheric compartment. For that reason no biodegradation simulation studies were conducted except the biodegradation screening test in water.
