Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when TPGDA introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Additional information

For assessment of ecotoxicity of Tripropylenglykoldiacrylate (TPGDA, CAS 42978-66-5) to aquatic microorganisms a weight-of-evidence approach was used. This approach consists of three available experimental studies.

In a short-term respiration test a 30 -min EC10 of > 10000 mg/L were determined, using the Pseudomonas putida species as inoculum. Hence, the30 -min EC50 is also >10000 mg/L (BASF AG, 1988, rep no.: 01/88/0671).

In a GLP guideline study conducted according to OECD 209 the structurally similar substance CAS 57472-68-1 was tested with domestic activated sludge. In this study a 30-min EC20 was determined to be > 1000 mg/L (BASF AG, rep no.: 02/0368/08/1, 2002).

In addition, Tripropylenglykoldiacrylate (TPGDA, CAS 42978-66-5) was tested in a Warbung-Test, DEV/L2. Activated sludge was used as a test organism in this study. The 30-min EC20 was determined to be > 1000 mg/L. However, this study is poor documented and, therefore, not reliable for the assessment.

Overall it can be considered, that the lowest ECx value is higher than 1000 mg/L. Thereofore, this value was used as a worst-case for the derivation of the PNECs STP.

Therefore, based on the weight-of-evidence approach, it can be concluded, that the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
