adverse effect observed (irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irreversible damage)

Additional information

In the OECD Guideline 404 (Acute Dermal Irritation / Corrosion) tests in rabbits, nickel nitrate was a skin irritant. Based on this data, classification as Skin Irrit. 2: H315 is warranted.

In the OECD Guideline 405 (Acute Eye Irritation / Corrosion) tests in rabbits, nickel nitrate causes serious eye damage and the effects were not reversible within the 21-day observation period. Based on this data, classification as Eye Dam.1; H318 is warranted.

The following information is taken into account for any hazard / risk assessment:

Skin: The skin irritation potential has been examined in studies performed by the OECD Guideline 404 (Acute Dermal Irritation / Corrosion) demonstrated nickel nitrate is a skin irritant.

Eye: The eye irritation potential has been examined in studies performed by the OECD Guideline 405 (Acute Eye Irritation / Corrosion) demonstrated nickel nitrate results in serious eye damage.

Value used for CSA:

Skin irritation / corrosion: irritating

Eye irritation: serious (irreversible) eye damage

Justification for classification or non-classification

Ni nitrate is classified as Skin Irrit. 2: H315 in the 1st ATP to the CLP Regulation. It is also classified as Eye Dam.1; H318. Background information regarding these classification has been provided in the discussion section above.
