Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for triacetin (CAS 102-76-1) is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2008).

Persistence Assessment

The screening criterion for Persistence (P) is the potential of a substance to be readily biodegradable. As triacetin is readily biodegradable, it is not fulfilling the criteria for Persistence (P) and is thus “not P” and “not vP”.

Bioaccumulation Assessment

The screening criterion for Bioaccumulation (B) is a log Kow > 4.5. As triacetin has a log Kow of 0.25, it is not fulfilling the screening criteria for Bioaccumulation (B) stipulated in the ECHA’s guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment – Part C: PBT Assessment (2008). Thus, triacetin can neither be considered bioaccumulative (B) nor very bioaccumulative (vB).

Toxicity Assessment

Triacetin is not classified according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (2nd ATP). Moreover, no long-term toxicity was observed in a study according to OECD 211. Thus, the criteria according to Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 are not met and the substance does not meet the Toxicity (T) criteria.
