Description of key information

Nanomaterials do not reach the equilibrium in adsorption-desorption studies with soils.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Adsorption and desorption are not applicable because silicon dioxide/silicate and aluminum are two of the most abundant materials in the Earth´s surface. Whatever their origin, once released into the environment, no distinction can be made to natural silicates (see also IARC monographs on the evaluation of the carcinogenic risk of chemicals to humans. Silica and some silicates, International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, 81-143, World Health Organization, Vol. 42 1987) or aluminates.
