Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Information about the prolonged toxicity of chloroform to species in the freshwater compartment is available from a number of valid studies. The PNEC aqua (freshwater), that has been derived by applying a factor of 10 to the NOEC for the most sensitive species - freshwater fish - is 0.146 mg/L. The marine PNEC (0.015 mg/L) and the PNEC for soil (0.019 mg/kg) were derived from this value because no valid studies are available that could be used to characterise these endpoints appropriately. These two estimated values are the lowest PNEC values derived for all environmental compartments. The PNEC aqua (intermittent releases) is derived from the lowest EC50 value obtained from short-term tests in Chlamydomonas reinhardii by applying a factor of 100. The PNEC for microorganisms (0.048 mg/L, assessment factor of 10) and for sediment-dwelling organisms (0.45 mg/L, assessment factor of 10) are derived from valid experimental data and are thus considered to be reliable.

Conclusion on classification

Based on the results of the available tests, chloroform does not need to be classified as dangerous to the environmentaccording to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
