Other possible route: Cannizaro reaction: Glyoxylic acid is an aldehyde without hydrogen atome in alpha position of carbonyl. It undergoes dismutation reaction during which one molecule of glyoxylic acid is oxidated to form oxalic acid and another one is reduced to form glycolic acid.
