Description of key information

The EC50 value, respectively the NOEC, from the activated sludge respiration inhibition testing according to OECD guideline 209 has been used for the chemical safety assessment.

Additional information

Different results from toxicity testing on micro-organisms are available. In first an OECD guideline 209 study with predominately domestic activated sludge showing a NOEC (3h) = 100 mg/L based on respiration rate as well as an EC50 (3h) > 1000 mg/L. In line with this results a second study according to a national guideline shows an EC20(4h) = 100 mg/L. As the latter result is from a publication of the German Commission on Evaluation of Hazardous Substances to Waters a comprehensive evaluation of the data quality is not possible. Therefore the results of the first study have been selected for the chemical safety assessment for the examination of effects on STP micro-organisms.

In addition, studies in single species have been also available. A growth inhibition study with Pseudomonas putida according to DIN 38412 showing an EC10 (18h) = 3.4 mg/L and an inhibition of photoluminescence study in accordance with guideline DIN 38412-L34 showing an EC50 = 210 mg/L. While for the growth inhibition study a full report was available and, in consequence, an evaluation of the quality was possible, for the latter study the published result by the KBwS was available only.
