Creosote oil, acenaphthene fraction (wash oil)is a liquid organic UVCB substance which consists of 2- and 3- ring aromatic compounds: Approx. 65 % of wash oil components comprise of naphthalene (11 – 13 % w/w), 1-methylnaphthalene (7 – 9 % w/w), 2-methylnaphthalene (17 – 20 % w/w), biphenyl (5 – 6 % w/w), fluorene (4 – 5 % w/w), acenaphthene (13 – 15 % w/w), and phenanthrene (ca. 2 % w/w).Due to the complex composition of wash oil, a single BCF value cannot be determined for the substance. Relevant components (all PAH) will have their individual BCF values.

Approx. 40% (w/w) of wash oil constituents consist of naphthalenes (including 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene). The range of BCF for these substances was found to be between 30 and 190 in fish. BCF values in fish of three-ring aromatic components may be above 1000 but generally lower than 2000 (compare to BCF in Table 25).

As for phenanthrene, although some bioconcentration factors in fish are found above 2000 but significantly below 5000, those results considered to be most reliable suggest BCF values below 2000 for phenanthrene: In their expertise, Lampi and Parkerton (2009) re-calculated the kinetics-based BCF values by accounting for the high lipid content of the fish (approx. 10 %). Normalised by this way down to the standard lipid level of 5 % in fish, the adjusted BCFs arrived at 417 and 1149, respectively. Furthermore, bioaccumulation potential of PAH within the food chain is considered to be low (Lampi and Parkerton 2009; WHO 2003; EU 2008).

Based on experimental evidence, wash oil is considered to have no bioaccumulating potential.
