Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The test item is a mixture of cis- and trans- isomers, typically in the concentration range of 30-40% cis- and 60-70% trans-, and is a liquid at ambient conditions. The trans- isomer also exists in two optical isomers, (1R)-trans- and (1S)- trans-. The measurement of the melting point or freezing point of such a mixture is difficult and often of little value as the properties will change depending on the composition of the mixture, particularly due to the relative ratios of the different isomers, and, because the substance tested is a mixture, no single melting or freezing point can be measured. Instead, a series of endothermic effects corresponding to phase transitions will be observed over the range of test temperatures. Endothermic phase transitions can be considered the equivalent of traditional melting points or melting ranges. Note that the presence of eutectic mixtures, solid-solid or solid-liquid equilibria, and mesophase transitions will affect the data observed.

Three endothermic phase transitions were observed in the scans for this mixture, reported at their peak temperature:

1) -37.9 °C

2) -25.9 °C

3) +3.3 °C

Conclusions:
The test item is liquid from ca. 3.3 °C.
Executive summary:

The melting range of the test item was determined according to OECD Guideline 102 and ASTM D3418-08 by differential scanning calorimetry.

The test item is a mixture of cis- and trans- isomers, typically in the concentration range of 30-40% cis- and 60-70% trans-, and is a liquid at ambient conditions. The trans- isomer also exists in two optical isomers, (1R)-trans- and (1S)- trans-.

Therefore, several endothermic effects were observed in the DSC curve (at -37.9 °C, -25.9 °C and at +3.3 °C).

It can be concluded that the test item is liquid from below or equal to 3.3 °C.
