Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid

Description of key information

The liquid test item is non-flammable based on flash point.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The test item is liquid at room temperature. Therefore, the methods for the determination of the flammability of solids are not suitable. Accordingly, the flash point of the test item was determined according to EU A.9 and ISO 2719:2002 by the equilibrium closed cup method. The flash point is 81 °C at 1013 hPa. Accordingly, the substance is non-flammable.

Ignition on contact with air:
The test item is according to the Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria (1) known from practical handling to be not pyrophoric. It is produced, handled and stored under normal conditions in air without any observation in respect to pyrophoric properties. Therefore, there is no likelihood that the test item possesses pyrophoric properties. According to these facts, further testing in respect to these properties is not required.

Release of flammable gases in contact with water
The test item does according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria (2) show one or more of the following properties:

  1. The chemical structure of the substance does not contain metals or metalloids;

  2. Experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured in water or washed with water;

  3. The substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture.

Therefore, it is considered as not forming flammable gases in contact with water. No further testing in respect to these properties is required.

According to (1), the phenomenon of self-heating applies only to solids. The surface of liquids is not large enough for reaction with air, and the available test method is not applicable to liquids. Therefore, liquids are not classified as self-heating.

(2) UN Manual of Tests and Criteria; Seventh revised edition; United Nations 2019; Appendix 6 SCREENING PROCEDURES

Justification for classification or non-classification

The flash point is 81 °C at 1013 hPa.

Therefore, the test item is not highly flammable and does not have to be classified for flammability according to Regulation (EC) 2008/1272.
