Additional information

The following study was retrieved from publicly accessible databases (see literature search, Appendix B): CITI (1992), carp (cyprinus carpio), "improved apparatus" for volatile substances, 6 weeks test period, lipid content 4.8%, test conc. 500 µg/L BCF = 0.9 - 1.4, test conc. 50 µg/L BCF <1.7 - 9.1: low bioconcentration. The original source and owner of the data is unkown. The log of the average of the 50 µg/L BCF range appears to be the value used to populate the internal CAESAR and BCFBAF databases.

Two different bioconcentration in fish (BCF) QSAR models were used to give a prediction for the LogBCF. Both models were in excellent agreement with each other, and within their respective expected error, when compared to the above experimental data. The key BCF is selected from CAESAR, as it is taken to be the generally more reliable model (see comparison Zhao, 2008). The experimental value could not be selected, as the original study was not available for evaluation.

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, 9.3.2, column 2, substances with a LogKow = 3 may be considered to have a low potential for bioaccumulation. The LogKow for diethyl ether is 1.05.

Based on the weight-of-evidence, diethyl ether is considered to show limited potential for bioaccumulation. The prediction BCF = 2.0 is considered to be adequate for meeting the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, 9.3.2, as part of a weight-of-evidence argument.
