- Type of information:
- (Q)SAR
- Remarks:
- Estimated by calculation
- Adequacy of study:
- other information
- Reliability:
- 4 (not assignable)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: Generally scientifically accepted method, but EPI Suite not validated for inorganic salts
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Calculated Bcfwin (v2.15)
- Type:
- BCF
- Value:
- 3.16 L/kg
- Remarks on result:
- other: Bcfwin (v2.15) QSAR calculation based on formic acid log Kow of -0.54.
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- not applicable
- Conclusions:
- A BCF value of 3.16 L/Kg was estimated for sodium formate by the Bcfwin (v2.15) QSAR in the EPISuite (v3.12) software using a Log Kow value of -0.54 (from formic acid).
- Executive summary:
A BCF value of 3.16 L/Kg was estimated for sodium formate by the Bcfwin (v2.15) QSAR in the EPISuite (v3.12) software using a Log Kow value of -0.54 (from formic acid). However, this BCF value is not assignable since EPISuite is not validated for inorganic salts.
- Endpoint:
- bioaccumulation in aquatic species: fish
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation based on log Kow <=3
- Justification for type of information:
- In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted if the octanol/water partition coefficient is <3. Due to the low log Pow of <-1.8 (Perstorp, 2009), accumulation in organisms is not expected. Thus, and for reasons of animal welfare, no study on bioaccumulation in fish is performed.
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- data waiving: supporting information

BCF estimation:
Metals (Na) are removed for BCF estimation.
- log Kow used: -0.54 (from formic acid)
- equation used: log BCF = 0.5 (ionic; log Kow dependent)
Description of key information
Significant bioaccumulation in organisms is not expected.
In accordance with column 2 of Annex IX, a bioaccumulation study does not need to be conducted if the octanol/water partition coefficient of the substance is <3. Due to the low log Pow of <-1.8 (Perstorp, 2009), accumulation of sodium formate in organisms is not expected. Thus, and for reasons of animal welfare, no study on bioaccumulation in fish is performed.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
