Description of key information

ENB was not readily biodegradable by mixed microbial populations in aqueous media.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

In a reliable study, ENB was not biodegradable when tested according to the OECD 301C guideline. In a guideline (OECD 301C) and GLP study conducted by the Chemical Evaluation Research Institute of Japan, no significant biodegradation of ENB was observed.

The BIOWIN QSAR predicts that ultimate degradation will however take place within a timeframe of weeks. Whilst there is no formal study available to verify this, the model would suggest potential for inherent biodegradability. However, based on available experimental data, it must be assumed that the substance is not biodegradable.
