Description of key information

Test data is available on the acute toxicity of copper slag to fish. The results demonstrate that copper slag is not chronically toxic at the concentration tested: 48 h EC 10 94 mg/l or >1 mg/l

A reliable study (De Schamphelaere, 2010) was performed which assessed the chronic toxicity of mesocosm water extracts of five slags on Brachionus calyciforus (rotifer).The 48 h EC10 for copper slag in the range of 94 mg/l to >674 mg/l were found. Typical slag samples have been tested which were within the composition concentration range defined in IUCLID Section 1.2.

The calculated classification via Toxic unit approach (Higher Tier Arche CLP Tool) resulted in No chronic classification for the UVCB substance.

Based on this result, the related criteria provided the estimated value for chronic (long term) toxicity to aquatic invertebrate (see EU CLP Annex I Table 4.1.0):NOEC (for crustacea) >1 mg/l

Using a weight of evidence approach, the lowest short-term toxicity of copper slag to invertebrates is greater than 1 mg/l.
