Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

As no experimental data evaluating the biodegradation potential of Fatty acids, C16-18, methyl esters (CAS No. 85586-21-6) are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, read-across from a structurally related category member, Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18 unsaturated, methyl esters, CAS No. 67762-38-3, was performed. Both substances are characterized as esters of methanol and C16 and C18 fatty acids and therefore, their biodegradation potential is expected to be very similar, and the read-across is justified. The available test was conducted according to ISO/DIS 10708 (BODIS test) under aerobic conditions using domestic activated sludge as inoculum (Richterich and Mühlberg, 2001). After 28 days, the test substance reached 87% biodegradation fulfilling the 10-day window criterion (> 60% biodegradation within that period). Therefore, the test substance is readily biodegradable.

Based on the results obtained for a structurally similar category member (according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5) Fatty acids, C16-18, methyl esters can be considered as readily biodegradable.
