The toxicity of Fe(Na)HBED towards rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was investigated in accordance to OECD Guideline 203 / EU Method C.1 (Rzodeczko, 2008). Slight deviations from the applied test guidelines were recorded, since body length and fish loading rate were above the recommended values. All other validity criteria were met. The fish were quarantined for two weeks before testing, whereby feeding was terminated 24 h before start of the experiment. Healthy animals, free from external parasites and visible deformations were used for testing. A preliminary study was conducted with concentrations of 10 and 100 mg/L (without chemical analysis), whereby no mortality was observed. The definitive test was conducted as a limit test in a static mode for a duration of 96 hours. 8 fish were used in the test concentration and the control (two replicates of 4 fish per 10 L aquarium), obtaining a fish loading rate of 1.32 g/L. Analytical monitoring was performed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with UV/VIS detector. Observations of intoxication and mortality were made at 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. No mortality occurred in the control group. Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) was used as reference substance, resulting in an binominal calculated LC50(96h) of 115.35 mg/L. For the test substance, the LC0(96) was determined to be greater or equal to 100 mg/L. The LC50(96h) as well as the LC100(96h) are greater than 100 mg/L. The test substance was stable during the exposure period and at the end of the study, 94 % substance of initial concentration was detected.
