Description of key information

The half-life for hydrolysis of e-Caprolactone (Capa monomer) in sterile aqueous solution (at a concentration of ca 1 g/L) was 15.7, 52.5 and 2.2 days at pH values of 4, 7 and 9, respectively (OECD 111). At all pH values the hydrolysis product was 6-hydroxyhexanoic acid which was stable to any further hydrolysis.

The test substance can be classified as readily biodegradable.

Requirements for bioaccumulation testing and adsorption/desorption testing were waived as the log Pow value of e-caprolactone (Capa monomer) is 0.32 (see section 4.7, partition coefficient).

Additional information

According to column 2 of Annex IX of the REACH Regulation, no bioaccumulation study is required if the log Pow is below the trigger of 3 as the substance can be expected to have a low potential for bioaccumulation. Furthermore, simulation testing in water and/or sediment and in soil does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable.

According to column 2 of Annex VIII of the REACH regulation, no adsorption/desorption study is required if the log Pow is below the trigger of 3 as the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption. Based on the log Pow value of 0.32 (OECD 117), the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption.
