Guideline:
EU Method A.1 (Melting / Freezing Temperature)
GLP compliance:
yes
Type of method:
method to determine freezing temperature
Key result
Melting / freezing pt.:
< -77 °C
Atm. press.:
1 013 hPa
Remarks on result:
other: The test item did not freeze under the conditions of the test

A preliminary test was performed to check the approximate freezing  temperature of methyltrimethoxysilane. The test item was stored about 24 hours at -20°C in a freezer. As the sample was not frozen after this  time the freezing temperature of methyltrimethoxysilane must be below -20°C.

During the main tests, about 5 mL of the test item placed in a small test  tube were cooled down from room temperature to about -77 °C using a dry ice and acetone mixture.

During both main tests, the test item increased in viscosity and became  turbid but was still movable. Therefore, no clear freezing point could be determined within the temperature range between -20°C and -77°C.

In conclusion, the test item did not freeze under the conditions of the  test.

Conclusions:
A melting point value of <-77°C at 1013 hPa was determined for the substance in a reliable study conducted according to OECD Guideline 102 and in compliance with GLP. The result is considered to be reliable.

Description of key information

Melting point: <-77°C at 1013 hPa (OECD 102)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A melting point limit value of <-77°C was determined for the substance in accordance with OECD 102 and in compliance with GLP. The result is considered to be reliable and is selected as key study.

The results reported in several other secondary sources, to which reliability could not be assigned, are in the range <-50 to <-78°C and -78°C. The supporting results are in agreement with the key study.
