Description of key information

The substance is not highly flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The flammability of C14 AO has not been measured directly as experience with other amine oxides has shown that it is not possible to produce a stable and/or water-free sample of these substances by freeze-drying. A study is available for C12-14 AO in which the flammability of a freeze dried sample of the substance was assessed in accordance with the procedure described in EU Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A test A10. In the preliminary screening test the sample melted and then briefly ignited with an orange flame, which extinguished on removal of the ignition source. No propagation of this reaction was observed. On this basis the substance is classified as not highly flammable.

It is considered that read across of this result to C14 AO is valid is valid due to the large overlap in chain length distribution between the two substances.

The substance is manufactured and placed on the market as an aqueous solution. From experience in use, the substance does not emit flammable gases in contact in water. Also from experience in use, solutions containing the substance are not pyrophoric.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is manufactured and placed on the market as an aqueous solution, therefore classification as a substance that emits flammable gases on contact with water is not required. From experience in use, solutions containing the substance are not pyrophoric. therefore, classification is not required.
