Bis(ethylhexyl) maleate is readily biodegradable under the conditions of the respective test, but fails the 10-day window criterion and ending up in a degradation rate of about 70% after 28 days. According to Level III Mackay Fugacity Model, soil is the main environmental compartment where bis(ethylhexyl) maleate is distributed. Based on a Koc value of 153400 L/kg it can be assumed that it is highly adsorbed onto soil particles.

About 23% of the substance reaches the water phase. Here, also a strong potential for adsorption to suspended matter and sediment is given, but modelling data indicate that only a small amount of about 2.5% reaches the sediment. The potential to bioaccumulate in the biotic environment is high.

The Henry's law constant of 4.16 Pa*m³/mol shows that the potential of bis(2ethylhexyl)maleinate to volatilise from the water surface is low, which is confirmed by the modelling data which show that only 2% will reach the air. An adsorption to airborne particles based on the Koc value cannot be excluded. This would indicate a potential for long-range transport, but its atmospheric half-life of 1.1 days is relatively short. Based on this, long-range transport of the substance as defined in the Stockholm convention for Persistent Organic Pollutant (POPs) is not expected.
