Additional information

Several studies are available on the acute toxicity of Propan-1 -ol to algae with effect values values > 1000 mg/l. The most reliable study was performed by Hsieh et al. (2006) using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism. To prevent volatilization losses the test was performed in a closed system with no headspace. Incubation time was 48 hours. The analytical measurement of stock solution was used to define nominal concentrations of the various treatments. The EC50 (48h) as determined in this study was 6370 mg/l and 9170 mg/l based on photosynthetic oxygen evolution and growth rate, respectively. The lowest valid effect value for algae was determined for Chlorella pyrenoidosa (Slooff et al. 1983). In a static test with 48 hours test duration, a NOEC (no observed effect concentration) of 1150 mg/l was determined based on growth rate (nominal). These results are supported by observations of Bringmann and Kuehn (1980).
