Description of key information

One studies of Klimisch reliability 2 is available (Kalbfus and Kopf, 1998). It was performed according to the second part of the OECD guideline 202, part 2 (Daphnia sp., Reproduction Test). The 21d NOEC value has been determined at 10 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater invertebrates:
10 mg/L

Additional information

Another study of reliability 2 is available (Marques, 2004), performed according OECD guideline 211 and showed a value of 21d NOEC > 10 mg/L for D.magna (the other specie of daphnia; D.longispina is not considered in guideline). This study is a supporting study for the 21d NOEC value determined by Kalbfus and Kopf, 1998.

The third study available (Wang and Lay, 1989), shows a 22d-EC50 can be determined to be approximately 120 mg/L.  No NOEC has been determined. This study has been assessed of reliability 3.

In effect, although the test was conducted according to OECD guideline no result of measured concentrations nor details of the statistical comparisons are given. Moreover, the authors did not taken into account the mortality of the parental generation (EC50 survival). This has a direct influence on the toxicity on reproduction (newborn daphnids) and should have been used to weight the final EC50 on reproduction. Therefore, this study is considered as invalid.
