Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Boron carbide does not noticeably react with oxygen below 1,000 °C, and therefore self-heating of the substance can be excluded up to 400 °C. In addition, a supporting study with boron carbide powder of particle size 1200mesh according to VDI 2263 show that boron carbide does not ignite up to 600 °C and is not flammable using an ignition source of 1,000°C.

Since preliminary results exclude self heating of the substance up to 400°C, the performance of a study to determine the self ignition temperature is not required and can be waived according to Column 2 of REACH Annex VII (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne per year or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.
