Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Potassium permanganate was nonmutagenic for all the Salmonella typhimurium as well as Escherichia coli strains both in experiments without as well as with metabolic activation.

The test substance Potassium permanganate, was tested for the assessment of cytogenetic damage using micronucleus test.

Statistically significant increase in the count of micronucleated immature erythrocytes compared to the control was not recorded at any dose level.

Under the given test conditions, the test substance, Potassium permanganate, has negative result in micronucleus test.

Negative results in the micronucleus test indicate that under the test conditions, the test substance Potassium permanganate, does not produce micronuclei in immature erythrocytes in bone marrow of rat.

The test material did not induce any toxicologically significant increases in the mutant frequency at the TK +/- locus in L5178Y cells and is therefore considered to be non mutagenic under the conditions of the test.

Short description of key information:
Gene mutation (Bacterial reverse mutation assay/Ames test) Four indicator Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA10, TA1535 and TA 1537 negative with and without metabolic activation. One indicator Escherichia coli WP2 uvrA negative with and without metabolic activation.
Gene toxicity in vivo: Negative results in the micronucleus test indicate that under the test conditions, the test substance Potassium permanganate, does not produce micronuclei in immature erythrocytes in bone marrow of rat.
The mutagenicity study on the thymidine kinase locus of the L5178Y mouse lymphoma cell line was conducted. The method used meets the requirements of the OECD (476) and Method B17 of Commission Regulation (EC). The study was performed according to GLP principles.

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)

Justification for classification or non-classification

Test results of potassium permanganate mutagenicity are negative
