Description of key information

Studies with soil macroorganisms are not required as direct and indirect exposure is unlikely.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A direct application of sodium mercaptoacetate to soil is not intented. According to chapter R.7c of ‘Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment’ (ECHA, 2008), readily biodegradable substances which are not directly applied to soil will not enter the terrestrial environment and as thuch there is no need for testing of soil organisms. This is true for thioglycolic acid and its salts which are considered to be readily biodegradable (please refer to point 5.2.1 of this IUCLID file). Additionally, these substances have only a low potential for adsorption to solids considering their low log Pow of -2.99 (please refer to point 4.7). Thus, even if soil would be a compartment of indirect entry of sodium

mercaptoacetate after aplication of sewage sludge as fertiliser, it is expected that residues within the sludge are negligible. In conclusion, tests with terrestrial organisms arenot relevant due to exposure considerations.
