Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The water solubility of the test substance was determined by the shake flask method according to guidelines in OECD 105.

Quantitation of the water soluble components in the ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) submission substance was perfomred by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) following derivatization of the water soluble portion to halogenated derivatives with pentafluorobenzyl bromide CASRN 1765 -40 -8. The derivitization procedure is described in the publication "Structural determination of zinc dithiophosphates in lubricating oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with electron impact and electron-capture negative ion chemical ionization" in theJournal of Chromatography A. 905(2001) 207 -222.  The derivatization process cleaves the intact ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) molecule in two replacing the zinc atom with two pentafluorobenzyl branches forming two pentafluorobenzyl phosphorodithioic acid molecules, each with two alkyl groups, which can be separated and identified by GC-MS.

Results of the study indicate the water solubiltiy of the substance is182 mg/L ± 9.4 at 19.5deg. C.

Quantitation of water soluble components based on GC peak areas % showed the following distribution:

ZDDP components containing C3 alkyldithiophosphate ligands accounted for 62.2% of the composition of the water solubles.  ZDDP components containing mixed C3/ C6 alkyl dithiophosphate ligands accounted for 28.3% of water solubles. ZDDP components containing C6 (isomers of 1,3-dimethylbutyl)ditiophosphate ligands accounted for the remaining 9.5% of the water solubles.
