Description of key information

In the OECD 301D test trichloroethylene was not readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

The results of biodegradation screening tests are variable. Trichloroethylene is not readily biodegradable under the stringent conditions of the OECD (301D) and is only slightly degraded in aerobic studies. However, biodegradation occurs when trichloroethylene is incubated with bacterial cultures in the presence of another substrate such as propane or formate or with adapted cultures.
