Description of key information

Tetramethylsilane (TMS, CAS 75-76-3; EC No. 200-899-1) is a volatile liquid at standard temperature and pressure, with a measured melting point of -99.1°C at 1013 hPa, and a boiling point of 27°C at 1013 hPa. It has a density of 0.63 g/cm³ at 20°C, and a vapour pressure of approximately 79500 Pa at 20°C. The high volatility of the substance makes water-based properties difficult to measure.

The substance is classified as an extremely flammable liquid in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 on the basis of a measured flash point of <-30°C at 1013 hPa and a boiling point of 27°C at 1013 hPa. It has a measured auto-ignition temperature of 340°C at 1019.5-1019.6 hPa, and is not explosive and not oxidising on the basis of chemical structure.

In contact with water, tetramethylsilane is not susceptible to hydrolysis due to the presence of stable Si-C and C-H bonds.

The substance has a predicted log Kow value of 2.7 at 20°C and water solubility in the range 19.6 - 90 mg/L at 20-25°C.
