Executive summary:

The aquatic toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol towards algae was experimentally investigated (BASF AG, 1989). The growth of Desmodesmus subspicatus as test organism was fluorimetrically determined. The test organisms were exposed to test concentrations of 0 (control), 1.562, 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 100 (pH adjusted) mg/L for 72 hours. As final result, an EC10 (72 h) of 24.49 mg/L and an EC50 (72 h) of 66.08 mg/L were determined.

The aquatic toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) towards algae was experimentally investigated (BASF AG, 1989). The growth of Desmodesmus subspicatus as test organism was fluorimetrically determined. The test organisms were exposed to test concentrations of 0 (control), 1.562, 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 100 (pH adjusted) mg/L for 72 hours. As final result, an EC10 (72 h) of 24.49 mg/L and an EC50 (72 h) of 66.08 mg/L were determined.

In the supporting study - a static screening study of Eide-Haugmo et al. (2012) with marine phytoplankton species Skeletonema costatum - aquatic toxicity of dimethylethanolamine (DMAE, CAS 108 -01 -0) and further 42 amines was determined. The test was performed according to ISO guideline 10253 of 1999, natural seawater served as test medium. Test substance concentrations used in this study were based on pre-tests with wide concentration-ranges. For DMAE a EC50 (72 h) value of 40 mg/L was calculated.
