Description of key information

Two GLP-studies according to OECD guideline 201 - one study conducted with pure valeric acid and one study conducted with a mixture of valeric
acid and 2-methylbutyric acid - are available.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
29.3 mg/L

Additional information

Two studies are available to assess the acute toxicity of valeric acid to algae. A GLP-guideline study conducted with pure valeric acid

has been selected as the key study as this study is reliable without restrictions (Klimisch 1). The ErC50 (72 hours) reported in this study is 29.3 mg/l. This enpoint is supported by a GLP-study conducted with a commercial mixture of valeric acid (ca. 64%) and 2 -methylbutyric acid (ca. 36%). The ErC50 (48 hours) reported in this supporting study is 73.2 mg/l.
