Valeric acid meets the criteria for ready biodegradation, and shows rapid and extensive biodegradation in a variety of tests. Valeric acid showed 72% biodegradation within 10 days of incubation in a standard Biochemical Oxygen Demand Test. Results of an OECD 301D Closed Bottle Test with a test chemical containing a mixture of valeric acid (64%) and 2 -methylbutyric acid (36%) showed 72% degradation within 11 days. Valeric acid also showed rapid and extensive biodegradation, 95% in 5 days, in an OECD 302B Zahn-Wellens Test.
