Description of key information

The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the toxicity to terrestrial arthropods.

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, column 2, 9.4 further studies on the effects on terrestrial organisms do not have to be conducted since the chemical safety assessment indicates that there is no need. No experimental data on toxicity to terrestrial arthropods are available for fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 68604-44-4). The test substance is characterized by a high log Koc indication a considerable potential for adsorption to the soil particles. Therefore, tests with soil-dwelling organisms that feed on soil particles are most relevant for the evaluation of soil toxicity of the test substance.

Since the substance is readily biodegradable, a chronic exposure of terrestrial organisms is not likely. Nevertheless, a chronic test investigating the toxicity to earthworms according to OECD 222 with the test substance is available resulting in a NOEC (56 d) ≥ 1000 mg/kg dw for Eisenia andrei.

Moreover, a chronic toxicity test with aquatic invertebrates is conducted with the read-across substance decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS No. 71010-76-9).The read-across substance is covering the variability of the group with shorter fatty acid chain lengths (C5-C10). Both substances, the read-across as well as the target substance, contain the same alcohol and are tetra-esters.The read-across substance did not show any chronic effects up to the limit of water solubility on the water flea Daphnia magna in a GLP study according to OECD 211. In addition, a chronic test with aquatic invertebrates with another read across-substance, fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsaturated, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS 85711-45-1) is available resulting in no effects up to the water solubility of the read-across substance. This read-across substance as well as the target substance belongs to the other end of the group with longer fatty acid chains (≥ C16).

Based on these information, toxicity to terrestrial arthropods is not expected to be of concern, and consequently, no further testing is required.
