Description of key information

Terrestrial plant toxicity was conducted, using open-top inhalation chambers, with twelve plant species to represent a range of European flora. The most critical NOEC was 46 μg/m3 in Phaseolus vulgaris (bean).

In the key study (Plant Research International, 2000) terrestrial plant toxicity was conducted using open-top chambers, which are considered to be the best technique currently available for providing near-field exposures. Twelve plant species were chosen for the study, to represent a range of European flora. Results are available on a wide range of species, covering trees, crops, ornamental/wild plants and mosses. A range of parameters were monitored as endpoints, and the responses show a wide range of sensitivities. The most critical NOEC was 46 μg/m3in Phaseolus vulgaris (bean). The NOECs of this study were recalculated based on significance to the controls, including endpoint will less ecological or economical relevant endpoints such as foliar effects. The NOEC range from 46 μg/m3to 2101 μg/m3.


Poplar were grown in hydroponically conditions, but were shown to be less sensitive on growth (45 mg/L) and sublethal effects, such as transpiration rate (38 mg/L).
