Description of key information

Na3NTA does not contain any functional groups associated with explosive properties. The substance itself is not explosive.
This could be confirmed by the drop stamp test performed by BASF (1978). No explosion occurred until 50 Nm (BASF1978-Na3NTA-Sicherheitstechn Kenndaten Trilon-explosiveness).
But fine dust may lead to explosions above concentrations of 2 kg dust per m³ air as the Monsato study from 1967 (Monsanto1967-Na3NTA-Determination Dust Explosivity-Explosiveness) showed. BASF (1978 - BASF1978-Na3NTA-Sicherheitstechn Kenndaten Trilon-dust explosiveness) showed that up to 1 kg/m³ no explosion occurred.

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Explosiveness

There are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule (expert judgement). Thus, the substance is not explosive. According the tests performed by BASF this assumption is confirmed. In a drop stamp test no explosion occurred until 50 Nm.

Dust explosiveness

The Monsato study from 1967 shows that dust explosions may occur above concentrations of 2 kg/m³. According BASF (1978) below 1 kg/m³ no dust explosion is possible.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance NA3NTA itself is not explosive. There are no structural indications for being explosive nor in a drop stamp test an explosion could be effected.

Dust explosion is possible under specific conditions.
