Short-term toxicity of the test substance Diethyl oxalate to fish (Poecilia reticulata) was examined according OECD test guideline 203 and GLP (BorsodChem 2011). However, the test report lacks information on preparation or stirring time of the stock solution. Furthermore, inconsistent analytical recoveries show that the hydrolysis of Diethyl oxalate already started well before the test organisms were introduced and proceeded during the study period. No information can be obtained from the study to which concentrations of Diethyl oxalate and/or Oxalic acid the fish were exposed to during the course of the study. However, it is very likely that Oxalic acid is the compound exerting toxicity. Therefore, it appears reasonable to disregard the study due to its limitations and to use information for Oxalic acid (and the second hydrolysis product, ethanol), applying a worst-case approach, to assess the aquatic hazard of Diethyl oxalate (for more detailed information on the approach taken, please see the read-across justification attached to chapter 13 of this dossier).

A short-term toxicity test of Oxalic acid (CAS 144-62-7) to Oryzias latipes according to OECD 203 reveals an LC50 of 27 mg/L after 96 h.
