Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Administrative data

Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
-1980
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
The test was conducted under the chemical substances control law of Japan from the National institute of technology and evaluation. Experimental data from a laboratory working under the same authority that investigated the modified OECD MITI should be regarded as reliable. A test plan from the same institute from 1990 is attached.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
On the basis of the available data Acetaldehyde could be considered as readily biodegradable.
Executive summary:

Acetaldehyde was investigated for ready biodegardability according to the Guideline OECD 301C (MITI-I) under the Chemical Substance Control Law of Japan. The study result indicated that the rate of degradation after 2 weeks was 80 % in biological oxygen demand (BOD) under the condition of 100 mg/L test substance and 30 mg/L of activated suludge. Acetaldehyde could thus be regarded as readily biodegradable.
