Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Nonanyl chloride is sensitizing in a valid pre-guideline LLNA.

The same result is expected for 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride due to close structural similarity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Additional information:

No data for skin sensitisation for 2-ethylhexynoyl chloride are available, but for the structural analog nonanoyl chloride (CAS: 764-85-2).

In a pre-guideline LLNA with nonanoylchlorid, groups of mice are exposed daily, for 3 consecutive days, to various concentrations of the test chemical or to the relevant vehicle alone, on the dorsum of both ears. On day 5 following the initiation of exposure, mice are injected intravenously with [3H]thymidine and activity measured as a function of isotope incorporation in draining auricular lymph nodes (Kimber and Basketter, 1992). A stimulation index ≥ 3, together was observed in all concentration. Therfore nonanoylchlorid is regarded as sensitizing in the LLNA.

Due to the close sturctural similarity the same result is expected for 2 -ethylhexanoyl chloride.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Additional information:

As the substance is toxic by inhalation no additional respiratory sensitization classification is warranted

Justification for classification or non-classification

Nonanoyl chloride is sensitizing in a valid pre-guideline LLNA, the same result is expected for 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride due to close structural similarity. As the substance is toxic by inhalation no additional respiratory sensitization classification is warranted.

According to the study results the substance is classified as skin sensitising cat 1 (H317) accronding of regulations 1272/2008/EC.
