In contact with water the substance will hydrolyse rapidly (SafePharm Laboratories, 2003).

Additional information

The test material has been determined to degrade spontaneously in contact with aqueous media. No rate constant or half-life could be determined experimentally by Method 111 of the OECD Guidelines for testing of Chemicals, 12 May 1981. At pH 4 and 0 °C, the hydrolysis was significantly greater than 50 % prior to analysis of the initial sample (SafePharm Laboratories, 2003).

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be performed if the substance is readily biodegradable or inorganic. 2-Ethylhexanoyl chloride hydrolyses rapidly and forms 2-ethylhexanoic acid and hydrochloric acid. 2-Ethylhexanoic acid is readily biodegradable (EKO LAB, 1998), while hydrochloric acid is inorganic.
