Additional information

Polycrystalline wools contain very few fine fibres limiting deposition in the distal regions of the lung, those depositing in the nose and upper airways are cleared to the alimentary tract. Very few fibres are ingested under normal circumstances, despite this two feeding studies were carried out. In the first study fibres were measured as fibres or as aluminium; there was a small increase in aluminium in the lungs but not in the liver or carcass. In the second fibres or calcined alumina were administered by gavage. Traces of aluminium were found in the urine but the bulk of the delivered dose occured in the faeces. It appears that there is no potential for metabolism or bioaccumulation.
